The SoCal Sound in the Late 90s
Blink-182 emerged from the end-of-the-millennium wave of pop-punk bands that provided the soundtrack to the skater/surfer culture in Southern California. Their sound was raw and high-energy rock. Their lyrics reflected suburban teenage angst with heavy doses of humor and lust. Their live shows, including several early Warped Tour appearances, were raucous affairs.
Tom DeLonge and Blink-182 had a significant impact on the music scene of that era. The band’s top-ten single “All The Small Things,” was included in a list of 100 Greatest Pop Songs issued by Rolling Stone and MTV in 2000 (Spotify playlist). It was released on their third album, “Enema of the State,” which reached number nine on the Billboard chart in 1999. Their follow-up album, “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket,” reached #1 on the chart in 2001.
